“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the amazing part you played in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on 2nd June, whether you were a Town Crier, Piper, Bugler/Cornet Player, Choir or a private or community Beacon Organiser, for without your involvement The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons and its associated events would not have been the enormous success they were.
TOGETHER, as a worldwide team, we ensured this unique tribute to our unique Queen Elizabeth, showed the world that the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories and the Commonwealth, along with those who took part from other countries, came together as one, and undertook a celebration party “fit for a Queen,” an occasion that will be fondly remembered by millions upon millions of people for many generations to come.
I don’t mind admitting, when standing next to Her Majesty The Queen at Windsor Castle, London, as she lit her Principal Beacon at 9.45 GMT, a number of tears of joy filled my eyes knowing that you had all played the part you promised, making huge efforts to do so, and I am extremely proud of you all, so again, THANK YOU“

Cllr Tom Munro, Chair of Whitwell Parish Council said, “It is with great sadness that I learnt today of the death of Prince Philip.
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was an outstanding public servant who gave his life to the service of the Country and also the Commonwealth, and communities across the district will be saddened by this news.
The Union Flag at the District Council offices is already flying at half-mast, and will continue to do so until 8am on the day after the funeral.
Unfortunately, in order to comply with Covid-19 restrictions in place, and to reduce the risk of transmission, Books of Condolence will not be available in public buildings for people to sign in person. Members of public are also respectfully requested not to lay flowers or other memorial items/mementoes.
A Book of Condolence is available online at the royal website: https://www.royal.uk/
May he rest in peace.”
The Parish Council will be laying a wreath on the War Memorial for the 75th Anniversary of VJ Day, Saturday 15th August 2020 at 11.00 am.
Unfortunately, due to current restrictions, there will be no ceremony, but parishoners are welcome to view the laying of the wreath adhering to current social distancing advice.
Children from Whitwell Primary School have very kindly participated by making flags to mark the event, which have been made into bunting that will be displayed in the garden at Whitwell Community Centre, along with a V J Day flag.
We would like to give a very big thank you to the children, and hopefully you will all be able to see your wonderful flags in the Community Centre garden.
