Help Whitwell Parish Council Plant a Second Orchard Hedge

As part of Bolsover District Council’s (BDC) Community Woodlands Project We are creating a traditional village orchard for Whitwell.

We have 670 hedging whips to plant in a 112m long double row of mixed native species hedgerow.  This will be amazing for wildlife and provide much needed shelter for the orchard and bungalows.

Staff and pupils from Whitwell Junior school, Scouts and Guides, Parish Councillors, the Bolsover Community Woodlands project and community volunteers came together to plant the first 270 native hedging whips for National Tree Week.

You are now invited to join volunteers on Saturday 14th January between 10.00am-3.00pm to help plant a further 670 whips along the boundary. You will need to wear protective clothing, wellies or sturdy boots and bring gardening gloves, spades and wheelbarrows if you have them please.

Katherine Church, BDC’s Community Woodlands Project Officer is organising the day so please get in contact with her or the Parish Council if you have any questions or would like to let her know you are coming email: Katherine.church@bolsover.gov.uk  Tel: 01246 242414.

It would also be good to form an orchard planning and support group with residents involved, so please let the Parish Council know if this would interest you.

Planting of orchard fruit trees will be arranged for Wednesday 22nd February.  We have selected a date during half term in the hope that children will be able to attend with their families, as those that attended the hedge planting with school really enjoyed the experience.

Please see the plan below to help you find the orchard, which is the triangle piece of land (points A-D) on the outskirts of the village accessible via a footpath from Claylands Road (point E).

Help Whitwell Parish Council plant a hedgerow of 1000 trees for National Tree week

As part of Bolsover District Council’s (BDC) Community Woodlands Project

the creation of a Community Orchard at Claylands, Whitwell will start with planting a hedgerow.

You are invited to join volunteers on Saturday 26 November and Monday 28 November between 10.00am-3.00pm to help plant whips along the boundary. You will need to wear protective clothing, gardening gloves and bring spades and wheelbarrows if you have them please.

Katherine Church, BDC’s Woodlands Project Officer, will bring along her apple press so if you have any spare apples from your garden please bring them along and apples could be pressed for on-site fresh apple juice too.

Bolsover TV will be visiting the orchard to do a feature on this project.

It would also be good to form an orchard planning and support group with residents involved, so please let the Parish Council know if this would interest you.

Whitwell Skate Park Official Opening 1 June 2017

Whitwell’s brand new skate park officially opened on Thursday 1 June 2017 with scores of youngsters enjoying the new facility.

Young people equipped with their bikes, scooters and skateboards took to the new park and were also treated to stunts and tricks from Bolsover District Council’s Extreme Wheels Roadshows Demo Riders.

The new Skate Park is concrete based with a variety of ramps and rails for users to test their skills and try out their tricks. Located on Bakestone Moor, it is free for anyone to use and is open on a daily basis from 9am to 8pm.

The skate park has been funded by Bolsover District Council, Viridor Credits, Whitwell Parish Council, Derbyshire County Council and built by Proludic.

Bolsover District and Whitwell Parish Councillor, Tom Munro said, “After months of refurbishment we are really excited to open this brand new facility. We have had young people chomping at the bit to use it ever since we started to refurbish it and from today’s attendance it looks like it will be a huge hit with them.

“We have worked very hard with our partners and local residents and have listened to the experts in planning and designing the new park to get a facility that people can enjoy and keeps them active – and I think we have achieved that.”
